I have been serving expectant and new families for over fifteen years and have only grown in my love for this work over that time. I began as a doula, childbirth educator and infant ASL instructor, earning certifications from DONA, PALS, ICEA and Sign2Me. I later moved into sleep consulting and birth consulting using an eclectic approach based on my extensive experience. I also offer infant parenting support through in-person classes or virtual coaching. My passion is enabling parents to embark on their birth and parenting journey with confidence and joy rather than uncertainty and fear. I seek to introduce my clients to strategies that are not only easily implemented but also customizable to match their priorities, philosophies and needs. Sleep consulting, birth consulting and infant parenting support are offered virtually, allowing you to receive assistance in the comfort of your own home. Infant parenting classes are in-person on the eastside.
Birth Consulting: As a birth consultant, I provide all the support of a doula without introducing an extra individual to the birth environment. For families that place a high value on privacy or for those that find traditional doula services cost prohibitive, a birth consultant is the perfect solution. My birth consulting clients receive educational, emotional and decision-making support throughout their delivery. My package includes a prenatal and postpartum visit as well as 24/7 on-call support beginning at 37 weeks. I am available throughout the labor and birth to answer questions, assist with advocacy for birth preferences, and offer suggestions on everything from positioning for back labor to relaxation and breathing techniques during transition. I also help my clients by providing information about any suggested procedures, enabling them to make informed decisions at every point along their birth journey. I offer the birth/labor support portion virtually via phone, text, FaceTime or Skype depending on preferences and circumstances. Prenatal and postpartum visits in the client’s home available (Seattle/Eastside area only).
Sleep Consulting: Once you bring baby home, you may find yourself facing sleep deprivation or chaotic day/night confusion, among myriad other infant sleep issues. I work with families to quickly and effectively solve nighttime and nap challenges, all while respecting my clients’ personal parenting philosophies, priorities and needs. I have experience with gentler approaches to lengthening sleep periods, but can also help with sleep training for those who are interested. I enjoy working to troubleshoot sticky issues such as cat napping, frequent night waking and others. I specialize in circadian rhythm regulation and the introduction of gentle routines, working with baby’s natural physiologic sleep cycles. Families who work with me are able to employ simple tools and strategies that result in better sleep, happier dispositions and less crying – for baby and for them! My package includes three 30-minute phone sessions with unlimited text/email follow up, as well as a customized sleep plan sent within 24 hours of the first scheduled call. I offer sleep consulting virtually worldwide via the methods listed above, or in-person in the Seattle/Eastside area for an added fee.
Infant Parenting Classes: For those wanting a more in-depth look at parenting their baby, I offer a 6-week class covering everything from feedings to fussing. Parents will learn how to interpret their baby’s cues and respond appropriately, as well as how to implement proven strategies for solid parenting in the first weeks and months. The class is principles-based rather than driven by a specific method, so I am able to accommodate diverse parenting styles and philosophies. Parents will emerge from the class confident in knowledge of their baby and ready to enjoy this special season rather than merely survive it. Classes are held on the eastside, and nursing babes in arms are welcome. Virtual infant parenting support also available at an hourly rate via the methods above.
Here’s what families are saying about working with me:
“Deana’s knowledge of labor, delivery, and postpartum life is second to none. Her attention to detail, genuine care and concern for her clients, and passion for this job shines through in every interaction you will have with her. You can ask anything you want without fear of embarrassment, be given knowledge and tools to help you in every step of the labor and delivery process, and feel prepared for almost anything that might happen. If you have ever heard me talk about either on of our births, you know that I cannot say enough good things about her. Truthfully, she is an angel among us to help you get through labor, delivery, and after you bring your little one home.” ~Bryan and Brianna (Birth and Education Clients – Snohomish County)
“I never imagined what benefit it would be to have a birth consultant until working with Deana. The actual hours of birthing are not the only time you need a doula. For us, it started months earlier when people were questioning my decision to work with a midwife for a home birth. Deana gave me the information and affirmation to trust my decision making. She was available at all hours to answer my questions, like whether to be worried about back pain, what supplements are really needed and what yoga poses can be helpful. After my baby was born, Deana encouraged me through my first few days when my baby wouldn’t latch. She never made me feel judged, but listened to my situation and offered specific advice that worked. I feel like Deana is the ideal friend for a woman becoming a mother. She made a point to understand my priorities and lifestyle and honor it. She shares genuine joy and well-balanced advice, a breath of fresh air in the world of naysayers and fear mongering. Her virtual presence made me feel like I had an ace card in my back pocket. Every expecting woman should be so lucky. ~Taleigh (Birth Consulting Client – Ometepe Island, Nicaragua)
“We really appreciated Deana’s thoughtful approach to developing a sleep strategy that worked for our family. She earnestly listened to us and reviewed our sleep diary before tailoring a plan for our situation. Deana was readily available when we had questions and able to adapt and modify the strategy based on our son’s response. We continue to check in with Deana to this day and even pinged her shortly after the birth of our second child to get us on the right sleep path.” ~Don and Joy (Sleep Consulting Clients – King County)
“We are so glad we called Deana! She helped us craft a plan that we were both comfortable with, and that gave us a lot of confidence as we embarked on sleep training our four-month-old. Almost immediately, everyone’s sleep improved, and kept improving. Not without a few hiccups, but Deana’s support over those six weeks was supportive and kind and just what we needed to keep going with the plan. Simply put, we did exactly what she said, and it WORKED. Thank goodness for Deana!” ~Brent and Kennan (Sleep Consulting Clients – King County)
“Deana is a LIFESAVER!!!!!!!!!! Our friends referred us to Deana for sleep coaching because my 3-month-old son had been using me as a 24-7 pacifier. Prior to Deana, I was sitting propped up on the couch with my son in my arms to sleep at night. During the day he would graze constantly and would not sleep or be ok if I set him down. He either had to be held or moving in order to sleep and usually would need a feeding to put him to sleep.
Being a first-time mom, I didn’t know what was normal as our pediatrician had recommended to “feed on demand” and never sleep train until our son was at least 6 months old. I was getting to the end of my rope, although I didn’t know how bad it was until we met with Deana and started to see improvements. My husband scheduled the first appointment with Deana and we had her visit our home to see how things were set up. She watched me nurse and we talked about our goals. Then she had us start right then on 90 minute awake/play cycles followed by 90-minute sleep cycles. Deana is an amazing listener and is extremely knowledgeable with everything baby and sleep…she even has great advice on feeding as well. She gave us good information to calm our fears about sleep training and explained how beneficial it is…not just for baby, but for us as well. I was actually able to take a shower that day and even go for a run during my son’s nap time.
We worked with Deana for over 6 weeks and implemented everything she taught us. She was so great at checking in and answering questions via text and email in between our calls. Deana gave us summary notes after each call with great steps to follow. We felt really well supported throughout the whole process and by the end of our sessions we had transitioned our son to sleep in his own room on his back, lay him down awake for his nap without needing movement to put him to sleep, have regular eating, playing and nap times, and have a consistent bed time routine that takes less than 5 minutes to put him to bed without crying.
The best part is that I have regular times to take a nap myself, time for self-care, time to do laundry, dishes, etc. and actually have a life because our little guy is on a predictable routine. I was amazed at how quickly Deana’s strategies worked. I am now really enjoying being a mom. We will definitely be using Deana in the future for our other kids, so we start off on the right foot! I cannot say enough good things about Deana…she gave us the tools and the support to implement those tools. She is well worth every penny and we highly, highly recommend her to anyone who needs help with sleep training their children. We have had so many compliments from other parents and friends who visit and see how easy it is to put our son down for a nap or down for bed. Thank you, thank you, thank you Deana!!” ~Sterling and Jessica (Sleep Consulting Clients – King County)
