Lesli Desai is a Clinical Social Worker providing individual, couples, and family therapy. By encouraging curiosity and self-compassion, she works to empower clients – reaching out for help is a sign courage, not weakness. Courage can be defined as “the willingness to show up and risk being seen, without knowing what will happen” (Brene Brown). With courage, comes strength, hope, and authenticity–ultimately a life you can be proud to live.

Motherhood is “supposed” to be intuitive, easy, and a joyful period in life but the truth is that becoming a mother is an intensely personal and challenging journey; it can be heart-wrenching, painful, and just plain gross. Whether you identify as depressed, anxious, or just having a hard time, I can provide support.
Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) are the number one complication from childbirth. Research has shown that there are critical points in the first year after baby’s birth, particularly at 1 month, 3-4 months, and 8-9 months postpartum. If your symptoms are interfering with how you take care of yourself and your family, or you just don’t feel like you and want to talk to someone, please call to schedule an initial consultation or a first appointment.
Together, we often focus on decreasing symptoms before addressing the underlying stressors that may have contributed to the pressures surrounding parenting including role transitions, past traumas or losses, and recognition of expectations vs reality. I use a variety of different techniques and modalities to help support women and families in their journey to parenthood.
Special Topics of Interest Include:
– Evaluation and treatment of PMAD, including but not limited to postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, panic, and PTSD
– Reproductive trauma or loss, including infertility, gender disappointment, miscarriage, stillbirth, birth trauma, and NICU/Preemie
– Transition to Parenthood – first time around or subsequent
– Alternative pathways to parenting such as single parenting, adoption, donor egg/sperm/embryo, LGBTQ, teen parenting, and later-in-life parenting
In addition to individual, couples, and family therapy, I teach workshops around the transition to parenthood and parenting through a small, local non-profit in West Seattle – you can find out more about the Bringing Baby Home Workshops and the Circle of Security workshops I teach at www.transitiontoparenting.org
